Mascota - Traditional Old Mexico Tour
Mascota Jalisco is the center of a rich farming valley surrounded by lush pine and oak forested ridges. Mascota is a traditional Mexican town dating back to the 1500’s. Mascota is a must see with its colonial haciendas, cobbled streets, a central plaza, and a majestic church dedicated to the Virgin de los Dolores (Virgin of Sorrows), which was completed in 1880 and took over 100 years to build!
Mascota was established in 1592 by early Spanish colonists looking for gold and silver. These early settlers soon found that the true treasure of Mascota is the fertile land. This fertile valley's 4300 foot altitude provides a semi-temperate climate that nurtures a wide variety of agricultural products such as wheat, rice, corn, oranges, lemons, avocados, grapes, sugarcane and Agave Lechuguilla, the sugar source for Raicilla - a moonshine mezcal that is produced in this region.
Our Mascota tour begins with a 90-minute mountain drive by air-conditioned van from Puerto Vallarta to the town of La Estancia. A beautiful town of adobe buildings. After a brief stop to rest and take pictures, we will continue on to Mascota.
Once in Mascota, we will take a walking tour of the towns plaza, churches, museums and candy factory.
We will next take you back into time to a cemetery which dates back to the 1600's.
Our final stop will be the Laguna Corrinchis.
